The starting point is Piazza al Serchio. From the parking lot, where an old steam locomotive stands, follow the road towards the Church of San Pietro and continue left towards the locality “Quattro Strade” skirting the fields planted with Farro (spelt), an ancient cereal typical of Garfagnana valley.
Keep on riding on asphalted and dirt road, until to village of Ponteccio. After crossing it, take a forest road towards Monte Tondo, in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine Park. After a few kilometers, go down to the left and continue to Passo di Tea and from here on the right up to Monte Argegna. Cross a lawn, where the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Guardia lies. From here you can enjoy a wonderful panorama of the Apuan Alps.
Continue to descend, following the asphalt road up to the Passo dei Carpinelli. Near a small chapel, take a dirt road leading to the village of Agliano and downhill to the lake of Gramolazzo. Skirting the lake and crossing a short tunnel, you reach the village of Nicciano. Here, following downhill the GT path to the right, arrive at the village of San Michele, continuing the road back to the starting point.
The Upper Garfagnana itinerary is a shorter version of this route.
