The MuGar – Garfagnana Archaeological Museum is located inside the former Sant’Anna convent in the historic center of Pieve Fosciana.
The museum houses the most important artefacts of the past discovered in Garfagnana, from the paleontological/fossil site of Sassorosso (Villa Collemandina) to key Paleolithic and Mesolithic sites (such as Isola Santa and Riparo Piastricoli), up to the crucial Etruscan settlement of Murella and more recent finds, such as ceramics from the Rocca Ariostesca of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Castiglione di Garfagnana.
The most important artifact on display is undoubtedly the bronze breastplate from Cima la Foce, a protohistoric find (Late Bronze Age – circa 11th century BC) virtually unique in Italy (only one comparable piece is found in Cuneo) and among the few in Europe, with similar but simpler examples found in Switzerland. Other bronze artifacts of notable interest include the Roman/Apuan Ligurian helmet from Croce di Stazzana, the Etruscan anthropomorphic bronzes, and the Greek red-figure vase discovered in the Buca di Castelvenere in Fabbriche di Vergemoli.
All 15 municipalities of Garfagnana are represented and can boast of having artifacts from their region exhibited in a museum.
